Overview
An app to manage exercise and diet for obese individuals trying to lose weight with a charater model that looks like them.
Obese individuals have lower confidence because their exercise and diet results are not immediately visible. I designed an application for them with a character model that resembles the user and changes the appearance and ability of the model according to the user's diet and health data, which are acquired with smartwatches.
Target
obese individuals
Primary Research
Problem 1.
The number of obese patients easily lost will to diet because of demotivated feeling.
It is hard for people to lose weight because of demotivated feelings and low self-esteem.
Secondary Research
Problem 2.
The number of obese patients easily lost will to diet because of demotivated feeling.
It is hard for people to lose weight because of demotivated feelings and low self-esteem.
Question
How could we motivate users to lose weight to be healthy again?
Cognitive Science
According to cognitive science, people remember human faces better and longer than just data.
This is because ventral streams in a brain specialize in long-term memory.
Competitor Analysis
Most health management applications only show health statistics without encouraging the users.
Through the support and encouragement from the character, users’ demotivated emotions about losing weight will turn into positive emotions.
Constant encouragement from the character will motivate the obese patients and nudge them to work out more often.

Estimated Impact
It could transform the dieting experience of the 670 million obese people from negative to positive.
It is alarming to note that there are about 670 million people in the world who suffer from obesity and its related health complications. If only 0.1% of them were to use our upcoming app, we could potentially assist 670,000 individuals in managing their health in a positive manner. This app, which is yet to be released, has the potential to make the challenging and tiring journey of dieting more enjoyable and motivating.
Takeaway
Bringing neuroscience to UX
Bringing neuroscience into UX helped me to design a more scientific application for healthcare, making it easier to motivate users. It also gave credibility to our ideas.
Usability testing is needed
I cannot guarantee the effectiveness of this app until I conduct user testing. During my upcoming usability tests, I must take into account how obese patients may react to the app. The character in the app that resembles them may have a demotivating effect.
